Br1 Body Armor: What the Br1 Protection Class Stops
· 7 min read · Andrey Sokolov
Br1 is the class people choose for a concealable vest worn every day: the pack is thinner and lighter than Br2 and hides under a shirt.

Br1 is a protection class against handgun bullets under GOST 34286-2017, the Russian body armor standard. To earn it, a pack must stop a 9×18 Pst bullet weighing 5.9 g with a steel core, fired from a Stechkin pistol (APS) at 5 meters at 335±10 m/s. The bullet must not pass through the back face of the pack.
What the Br1 class protects against
The standard has six main classes, from Br1 to Br6, and Br1 is the lowest. Next to them are special classes: S is tested with a blade, S1 with a hunting shotgun, S2 with a fragment simulator. Each class is a single test with a specified weapon, not a list of threats.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Weapon | 9 mm Stechkin pistol (APS) or a ballistic barrel with the same parameters |
| Cartridge | 9×18 Pst (57-N-181S) |
| Bullet | 5.9 g, steel core |
| Bullet velocity | 335±10 m/s, measured 3 m from the muzzle |
| Distance | 5 m |
| Bullet energy | about 330 J (our calculation, the standard does not list it) |
| What is checked | the bullet does not pass through the pack, and the behind-armor effect stays within the permitted limit |
What Br1 stops and what it does not
Stops:
- the 9×18 Pst bullet from the APS under the test conditions;
- a blade: all IRON TACTICA models of class S and higher protect against a knife, and the Br1 pack is thicker, with more layers.
Does not stop:
- the 9×21 bullet from the SR-1: it is heavier and faster and needs class Br2;
- the armor-piercing 9×19 (7N21) with a heat-hardened core: it is tested in class Br3;
- assault rifle and rifle bullets of classes Br4-Br6: only hard armor plates stop them, and a soft pack is not designed for that;
- a shot to an uncovered area: the shoulder, the neck, or the side on a vest without side packs.
The PM, less-lethal guns and 9×19. The Makarov pistol (PM) is not in the table, but it fires the same 9×18 Pst cartridge, and its barrel is shorter than the APS barrel, so the bullet is slower than in the test. That is why we place a shot from a PM within the Br1 conditions: it is a conclusion from the test method, not a line of the standard. GOST does not test less-lethal ("traumatic") guns. Under Federal Law No. 150-FZ "On Weapons", the muzzle energy of civilian less-lethal guns is capped at 91 J, more than three times less than the Br1 test bullet.
GOST says nothing about the ordinary 9×19, for example for a Glock pistol: the table only has the armor-piercing 7N21 in class Br3. Only firing at a pack shows how it behaves with such a bullet. In Astrakhan we publicly shot at our own Br1 pack: three pistols and a carbine, 9×18 and 9×19 cartridges, not a single penetration (the video is on our home page). That was our own test, not a GOST test.
How Br1 differs from Br2
For Br2, the pack is tested with the SR-1, the Serdyukov pistol, and the 9×21 P cartridge. Its bullet weighs 7.93 g, has a lead core and flies at 390±10 m/s, and its energy is about 600 J - almost twice that of the Br1 test. The pack material is the same; the difference is the number of layers: a Br2 pack is thicker and, for the same area, heavier.
The price difference is easy to see on DARK ARMOR M-3, which we make in both classes: $400 for Br1 and $456 for Br2. A detailed comparison is in the article "Br1 or Br2: what each protection class protects against", and the higher class is covered in "Br2 body armor: what the Br2 protection class stops".
What Br1 S2 means
Two marks mean two classes, each with its own test. Br1 covers the handgun bullet. S2 is the anti-fragmentation class: the pack is fired at with a 1.05 g steel ball in place of a fragment. The required ball velocity (V50) is set not by the standard but by the documentation for the specific product.
S2 does not mean knife protection. Blades are covered by class S: a 6Kh5 bayonet strikes the pack with an energy of 49 J. S1 has nothing to do with knives either: it is a 12-gauge hunting shotgun slug. Our COYOTE is rated S2 and Br1.
How much Br1 body armor weighs
The class is only one reason for the weight. The rest is pack coverage, size, fabric and the cut of the cover. For comparison, two of our models, weight without packaging according to the catalog:
- COYOTE - 1.4 kg, packs on the front and back;
- DARK ARMOR M-3 - 2.6 kg, packs go all the way around, the sides are covered too. The catalog gives this one figure for both Br1 and Br2, with no weight per class, and a Br2 pack of the same area is heavier.
So it is a trade-off: COYOTE is lighter and easier to hide under clothes, while M-3 protects the sides.

How to check that a vest really is Br1: certificate and test report
A class in a listing proves nothing. Two documents confirm it, so ask for them before you pay:
- A certificate of conformity. It must state GOST 34286-2017, class Br1, the validity period and the product it was issued for.
- A test report. Check the laboratory, the date, the weapon and the cartridge: for Br1 it is 9×18 Pst at about 335 m/s. It also shows the result of each shot.
Our certificate was issued under a voluntary certification system, number РОСС RU.32623.ОС10.04969. It was issued on 11.03.2024, is valid until 10.03.2027 and lists five classes under GOST 34286-2017: S, S1, S2, Br1 and Br2. Every vest comes with a copy of the certificate and the test report. The scan is open in the "Documents" section, and we will send copies before you order, too.
Which IRON TACTICA models come in class Br1
| Model | Classes | Pack coverage | Sizes | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| COYOTE | S2, Br1 | chest and back | M-XL (48-54) | $367 black, $389 beige |
| DARK ARMOR M-3 | Br1 or Br2 | full perimeter, including the sides | S-4XL (44-58) | Br1 - $400 |
| DARK ARMOR M-3 Big Size | Br1 or Br2 | full perimeter, including the sides | 5XL-6XL (60-62) | Br1 - $478 |
COYOTE is made for everyday wear under a shirt or a jacket. DARK ARMOR M-3 comes with a Br1 or a Br2 pack; you pick the class on the model page when ordering. Br1 is also used in the TactiX tactical plate carrier: plates up to Br5 go into its pockets and are bought separately.
When standard sizes do not fit your build, we make the vest to measure, men's or women's, at no extra charge. A call to 8 800 101-76-37 is free. Describe your day in the vest (work, commute, how many hours in a row), and we will suggest a class and a model.
Frequently asked questions
What does the Br1 class protect against? It confirms that the pack stopped a 9×18 Pst bullet from a Stechkin pistol traveling at 335 m/s from a distance of 5 meters. Br2 bullets, assault rifles and rifles are not part of its test.
Will Br1 stop a Makarov pistol? The PM uses the same 9×18 cartridge as the test, and its short barrel makes the bullet slower, so a PM shot does not exceed the Br1 conditions. The PM is not named in the standard.
Does Br1 body armor stop a knife? Ours do: any IRON TACTICA model of class S and higher protects against a blade, and a Br1 pack has more layers. Under the standard, knife resistance is tested by class S: a bayonet strike with an energy of 49 J.
What does protection class Br1 S2 mean? The vest has two confirmed classes at once: against handgun bullets (Br1) and against fragments (S2). That is the combination our COYOTE has.
Is class 1 body armor the same as Br1? No, that designation comes from the withdrawn GOST R 50744-95, where class 1 was tested with the Makarov pistol and the Nagant revolver. The current GOST 34286-2017 replaced it on March 1, 2019; classes Br1-Br6 are tested with different cartridges, and an old number cannot be converted into a new one.
