How to Choose a Body Armor Manufacturer and What to Check

A body armor manufacturer is judged by three things: the documents for the specific model, the label on the vest itself, and what the company does after the sale. For concealable armor, add sizing and fit. For a batch ordered for a security team, add a sample, each employee's measurements and production lead time.

What to check with a body armor manufacturer: the short version

What to check before you pay, and what happens if you skip it
What to check What to look at If it is missing
Certificate model, classes, standard and validity date match the listing nothing confirms the protection class
Test report weapon, distance, result and which pack it covers it is unclear what was actually tested
Label model, class, size and production date on the vest itself the vest cannot be tied to the documents
Sizes a size chart with measurements, or made to measure the vest fits badly and stays in the closet
Lead time production and delivery time stated before payment the batch arrives later than you need it
Support and warranty terms are in writing, questions on fit and care get answered there is no one to ask after the purchase

The first three rows are about protection. The rest decide whether the vest gets worn every day.

How to check a body armor certificate and test report

Put the product listing and the certificate side by side. Four lines must match: the model name, the list of classes, the standard number and the expiry date. Russian classes are set by GOST 34286-2017, and there is no "Br2+" among them. An "NIJ IIIA" mark belongs to the American testing system and does not replace a Russian class.

The test report is the record of the lab shooting. It lists the handgun and cartridge, the distance and the result of each shot. Under the standard, bullet tests are fired from 5 meters. Check the header of the report: it names the product, and a report for someone else's pack has nothing to do with your vest.

If you doubt the number, write to the certification body named in the document. Ask for the papers before you pay, not when the parcel arrives.

Our number is РОСС RU.32623.ОС10.04969, valid until March 10, 2027, and the scan is open in the Documents section. We send both copies on request before the order, and they also come in the parcel with the vest.

What to check on the body armor label

The documents describe the model; the label ties a specific vest to them. Look for the manufacturer, model, protection class, size and production date.

The service life set by the manufacturer is counted from the production date. A vest with no date or a worn-out label cannot be checked.

For a batch, check the labels on several vests in a row. Model, class and sizes must match the delivery note and the model documents.

What local production gives the buyer

Domestic production gives the buyer four things:

  • Lead time. The vest is made and shipped within the country, without customs or resellers.
  • Fit. The workshop cuts for a specific person instead of selling a stock size at random. Our made-to-measure vests cost the same as standard ones, for both men and women.
  • Answers about the product. A fit question is answered by the people who drew the patterns, not by a store operator.
  • Repeat orders. A year later you can order the same vests for new employees.

The protection class does not depend on how close the workshop is. Photos of machines and the word "manufacturer" do not prove it; the test report and the certificate do.

Buying body armor for a security team: what to agree on before the batch

A guard wears the vest for the whole shift, so agree on six things with the manufacturer before ordering a batch.

  1. A sample. One or two vests are tried on by the people who will wear them, standing, sitting and behind the wheel.
  2. Sizes per person. You need a list with each employee's chest circumference and height, not "20 vests in size 52". Which measurements to take is covered in How to Choose a Body Armor Size and Check the Fit.
  3. A class for the task. A checkpoint post and cash-in-transit carry different risks: in one case blade protection (class S) is enough, in another you need handgun-rated Br1 or Br2.
  4. Documents for the batch. Copies of the certificate and test report, and a delivery note with models and sizes.
  5. Lead time and delivery. The production time for the batch goes into the contract. We ship orders by CDEK to a pickup point, and terms for bulk buyers are discussed separately.
  6. Storage. Decide in advance where the vests stay between shifts: laid flat on a shelf or on hangers, in a cool room without a sunny window.

Concealable body armor: why fitting and fit matter

Under a shirt, a vest is more often given away by fit than by thickness. The panel lifts off the chest, the edge sticks out, and when seated the vest rides up to the throat. For concealed carry, ask the manufacturer:

  • which measurements the size is based on: chest circumference and height, not shirt size;
  • what the packs cover: only chest and back, or the sides as well;
  • what keeps the panels in place: straps and hook-and-loop at the shoulders and waist stop them from shifting when you move;
  • what to do if your build falls between two sizes.

COYOTE covers the chest and back, weighs 1.4 kg and costs from $367. DARK ARMOR M-3 protects all around, sides included, comes in Br1 and Br2 and costs from $400. For larger builds there is M-3 Big Size. Prices as of October 8, 2026.

For a batch or a single vest, call 8 800 101-76-37: describe the job, the shift and the clothes the armor will go under. We will suggest a catalog model or a made-to-measure vest.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check a body armor certificate? Put the product listing next to the certificate: the name and classes should match, and the validity period should not have ended. The authenticity of the number is confirmed by the body that issued the document.

Can I buy body armor directly from the manufacturer? Yes, a civilian in Russia needs no license to buy it. Buying direct is cheaper: a marketplace takes a percentage from the seller, and it ends up in the price.

How long does body armor last? As long as the manufacturer states on the label, provided the pack is intact. Every 6-12 months, take the packs out of the cover and inspect them.

How do I compare Russian-made body armor with imported armor? Only by the documents for the model. An imported vest often has just an American NIJ level, and a comparison with a domestic one needs a GOST 34286-2017 class confirmed by testing.

Where is IRON TACTICA body armor made? In Saint Petersburg, in our own workshop. Patterns, cutting, sewing and assembly all happen in one place.
