IRON TACTICA Concealable Body Armor: Made in Saint Petersburg

We are IRON TACTICA, a body armor factory in Saint Petersburg. Almost everything we make is designed for concealed wear: under a shirt or jacket, the vest stays invisible. We do the patterns, cutting, sewing and assembly ourselves. Below we tell how the company started, how our products are built, what the letters and numbers in the markings mean, and what to ask the seller if you are buying protection for the first time.

How IRON TACTICA began

The company's founder is Mila, an entrepreneur from Saint Petersburg. Before this, she worked in advertising, car repair and the auto parts trade. She was never intimidated by a male-dominated environment.

In 2020, at the height of the lockdowns, Mila launched a lingerie and beachwear brand. Friends did not support the idea - the timing seemed as bad as it could be. She drafted the first designs at home, with paper spread out on the kitchen floor, and contract workshops sewed them. Customers came quickly. In 2021 the contractors began missing deadlines, and she opened her own sewing factory in Saint Petersburg.

In 2022 everything turned upside down. Many of Mila's friends and acquaintances urgently needed protection. People came to her for advice, and soon with orders. Gear was in short supply and worth its weight in gold.

The factory started running around the clock. By day the machines stitched lingerie, and at night the workshop sewed tactical gear. At the same time, Mila was developing protective equipment: drafting patterns, sewing trial samples and spending hours asking the owners of the first vests what got in the way, where it chafed and what to fix. They came to the workshop, tried things on and argued over details. Many solutions in our current models were born in those arguments. At home her daughter was waiting, who, as Mila puts it, understood everything and held down the fort.

The brand name came at dawn. After a night shift Mila stepped out of the workshop: she had to drive home, change and come straight back to work. On the way to the car it clicked: IRON TACTICA, iron tactics.

Then came a choice. Mila closed the lingerie brand and fully re-equipped the workshop for body armor. It was a hard decision: lingerie had been her personal project. But she returned to where she had started - to tough, demanding work. Only now it is armor instead of auto parts.

Every model is the work of our workshop team: the pattern maker builds the patterns, the seamstresses assemble the sample, and our consultants test it in real wear. We do not re-sew other people's blanks and we do not copy other makers' vests.

Concealed vs. overt wear: what is the difference

A concealable vest is worn under clothing: a shirt, a sweater, a blazer. It has a flat profile, and COYOTE, the lightest in our line, weighs just 1.4 kilograms. The soft pack is entirely textile, so a walk-through metal detector at a turnstile will not pick it up. That does not exempt you from a personal search. These vests are ordered by people working in cash-in-transit, delivery and security, and they are worn by drivers and business owners. They need protection every day, but not on display.

An overt vest is worn over clothing. On the outside it has MOLLE webbing for attaching pouches, at the back there is a drag handle, and inside there are pockets for hard plates. It protects more, but it also weighs more: our OBSIDIAN Basic assault kit comes in at 9 kg.

We are asked more and more often about fragments: with all the news about drones, even people in quiet cities are thinking about them. Fragment resistance under GOST is confirmed by the S2 class, and our concealable models have it. A vest like this does not catch the eye, yet it covers the chest and back against fragments.

Our catalog has both formats, but our main focus is concealed wear. Here comfort matters just as much as the protection class: an uncomfortable vest will end up sitting in the closet.

Protection classes under GOST 34286-2017

In Russia, body armor classification is set by the 34286-2017 standard. For each class it specifies the exact weapon and cartridge used to fire at the vest in the lab.

Protection classes under GOST 34286-2017
Class Test threat What it stops
S Bayonet knife, impact of about 49 J Blades: knives, shivs, bayonets
S1 12-gauge hunting cartridge Smoothbore shotgun slugs
S2 Steel ball simulating a fragment Fragments
Br1 APS (Stechkin), 9x18 cartridge 9 mm pistol bullets
Br2 SR-1 (Serdyukov), 9x21 cartridge More powerful pistol cartridges
Br3 PYa (Yarygin), 9x19 cartridge 9 mm steel-core bullets
Br4 AK-74 and AKM, 5.45x39 and 7.62x39 cartridges Assault rifle, hard plate only
Br5 SVD, 7.62x54 cartridge Sniper rifle, hard plate only

Vests worn under clothing usually range from S to Br2. Fabric is powerless against assault and sniper rifles - only a hard plate works there. Some of our models have universal plate pockets for plates up to Br5. Plates are sold separately; OBSIDIAN MAX comes with two Br5 plates.

Imported vests are often labeled with levels of the American NIJ standard, such as IIIA. There is no direct equivalence between NIJ and GOST: the Americans use different cartridges and their own test methods. Go by the Russian class stated in the documents for your specific vest.

Documents: certificate and test report

Every vest comes with two papers: a copy of the certificate of conformity and a report of the lab firing test of the ballistic pack. Our certificate number is РОСС RU.32623.ОС10.04969, valid until March 2027. Scans of the certificate and test reports are on our website in the Documents section. The materials are also declared under TR CU 019/2011.

Do not confuse these documents. The certificate is issued for the model. The test report records how the pack held up under fire in the lab: which weapon was used and whether there was any penetration. A seller who shows you a certificate but dodges questions about the test report should raise a red flag.

We send copies of the documents before purchase - just call or message us.

What we make our vests from

Ten to fifteen years ago, ballistic packs were made mostly from aramid, that is, Kevlar or Twaron. It is a capable material, but heavy, and moisture and sunlight gradually degrade it.

In all our packs we use UHMWPE, ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene. Dyneema and Spectra belong to the same class of materials. It is lighter than aramid and absorbs almost no water. The pack is built up from many thin sheets with cross-plied fibers: the bullet gets bogged down in them, and the energy spreads across the surface.

An acronym on the label is not protection in itself. What matters is the number of layers and the density of the fabric, and cutting layers is the easiest thing in the world: the marking stays the same. We do the opposite and use more layers than GOST requires for the class. For us the standard is the minimum, and there is always a reserve on top of it.

That is also where the weight comes from: a Br1 COYOTE weighs under one and a half kilograms, while an aramid equivalent would come in at over two.

Cover and lining:

  • outer cover - Cordura Ballistic 500 ballistic nylon, a proven fabric for tactical gear;
  • next to the skin - soft padding made of Izolon foam and neoprene;
  • against overheating - 3D Air Mesh;
  • straps and fit adjustment - hook-and-loop;
  • load-bearing seams are stitched with reinforced thread from Turkey.

Our background in lingerie helped here. Lingerie is also designed around the body: what matters is where the garment presses, where it chafes and how it behaves in motion. It is exactly the same with body armor. If a vest restricts movement and chafes, it will come off within an hour. That is why we make vests you can wear from morning to evening.

Our models

The catalog has more than ten items, from light vests worn under a shirt to assault kits. The main ones:

Main IRON TACTICA models (prices as of October 2, 2026)
Model Wear Class Weight Price
COYOTE Concealed S2 / Br1 1.4 kg from $367
DARK ARMOR M-3 Concealed Br1 / Br2 2.6 kg from $400
DARK ARMOR M-3 Big Size Concealed Br1 / Br2 2.6 kg from $478
ELITE BLACK Tactical Br2 3 kg $456
DARK ARMOR M-5 Tactical Br2 3.1 kg $478
OBSIDIAN Basic Assault Br2 / S2 9 kg $733

COYOTE is the lightest vest in the line, designed for everyday wear. Classes S2 and Br1 protect against fragments and pistol bullets. Colors: olive and black.

DARK ARMOR M-3 provides all-around protection: packs sit on the chest, back and sides. We make it in two configurations, Br1 and Br2. The size range is S-4XL, and for the largest builds there is a separate M-3 Big Size. The side cummerbunds stretch, the shoulders and waist close with hook-and-loop, and the vest fits snugly.

ELITE BLACK is designed for professional use: Br2 packs all around including the sides, MOLLE on the front, universal plate pockets and a drag handle.

OBSIDIAN Basic is a modular assault kit for overt wear. The kit includes the vest itself with Br2 packs, cummerbunds with Br1 packs, shock-absorbing pads (KAP) and a Helmet Carrier system. Hard plates can be purchased separately if needed.

A non-standard build is not a problem: we will take your measurements and make it to measure, at no extra cost. We sew for a specific person and their task, not for an average buyer.

Tested by live fire

We publicly fired at our vests in Astrakhan, at the range of the "9×19" club, and recorded everything on video. This does not replace a lab test to the standard: the protection class is confirmed by the documents we described above.

The Br1 pack was shot with 9x18 and 9x19 bullets from three pistols and a carbine, with no penetrations. The Br2 pack withstood double taps from pistols and then a shot from a carbine firing a .366 TKM cartridge.

The instructors on the firing line made a special point about the KAP, the climate-control and shock-absorbing liner under the pack. A bullet may be stopped, but the impact still reaches the body. This is called behind-armor blunt trauma, and the KAP softens it. They also praised the fit: the vest does not shift around or restrict movement, and the drag handle holds as it should.

The firing test video is available on our home page and on Rutube.

What our customers say

At one point we got hold of a genuine vest from the Israeli brand Masada, long considered a benchmark for concealed wear. We took it apart and compared it with ours seam by seam. Our stitching turned out straighter and our edges more neatly finished. Customers who have switched to us from Masada notice the same and add that our vest is more comfortable to wear all day, while costing less.

People often praise the look: the vest appears neat and modern, without military roughness. One customer admitted that when he put it on, he felt like John Wick. Our team still retells that line.

Orders go out to every region of Russia and to neighboring CIS countries. Many people come to us on a friend's recommendation: they saw the vest on someone they know and wanted one too.

IRON TACTICA vests are sold on our website and on marketplaces: Ozon, Wildberries, Avito and Yandex Market. We collect the reviews from these platforms on a single page, where the average rating is 4.9 out of 5.

Where it is cheaper to buy

A marketplace commission can sometimes reach half of the product's price, and in the end it is the buyer who pays it. Our website has no middleman, so ordering directly costs less. We ship orders via CDEK to a pickup point, and the website calculates the delivery cost and time at checkout.

What we are working on

We have models in development that are not yet on sale.

VALKYRIA is a concealable vest for women. The female body is shaped differently, and a standard vest fits it poorly: it presses in some places and leaves gaps in coverage in others. We are designing VALKYRIA around female anatomy. While it is in development, we will make any model from the catalog to women's measurements at no extra charge.

IRONKID is body armor for children. Parents ask more and more often how to protect a son or daughter from fragments, and certified children's vests are almost impossible to find on the market.

MediaARMOR and MedARMOR are vests for journalists and medics who have to work in dangerous areas.

How to choose concealable body armor

What to find out before you buy:

  • What threat concerns you. Against blades you need class S, against fragments - S2, against pistols - Br1 or Br2. Only a hard plate will stop an assault rifle or sniper rifle bullet.
  • How you will wear it. For wear under a shirt, choose a light, flat vest. If you will wear it over a jacket, you will need pockets, a drag handle and MOLLE webbing.
  • What the documents say. Ask to see the firing test report for the pack, not just the certificate. If there is no report, find out why.
  • How many layers the pack has. Polyethylene packs of the same class can vary a lot. Ask the seller about the number of layers and the fabric density.
  • What size you need. Your local store has no fitting room for body armor. You can choose a size from the size chart or send us your measurements, and we will make the vest to fit your build. COYOTE comes in three sizes: 48-50, 50-52 and 52-54 (M, L and XL). The M-3 covers 44-58 (S-4XL), with sizes 60-62 moved to the Big Size version. Which measurements to take is explained in our article "How to choose your body armor size and check the fit".
  • How much it costs. Our most affordable concealable vest costs $367 (COYOTE in black). An offer that is several times cheaper usually means someone saved on the most expensive part - the ballistics.

No permit is required to buy one. Russian law classifies body armor, including class Br5, as protective equipment rather than weapons, so it is sold freely to Russian citizens. Where a vest can still raise questions, from airplanes to rallies, we cover in the article "Can a civilian buy and wear body armor".

Care and service life

A polyethylene pack will last 5-7 years if stored carefully and kept undamaged. Remove the packs before washing the cover. The packs themselves must be kept away from water, radiators, direct sunlight and a scorching-hot car interior, and they should be stored flat. At least once a year, and preferably every six months, check them for tears and dents.
