How to Put On Body Armor with Plates and Fit a Plate Carrier
· 5 min read · Andrey Sokolov
Plates go into the pockets first, then you put on the vest and set the height with the shoulder straps: the top of the front plate at the notch at the base of the throat. Tighten the cummerbund for a snug fit that does not restrict breathing. The final check is in motion, with pouches and gear.

Step 1. Insert the plates before putting on the vest
- Put the plate into the pocket on top of the soft panel.
- Turn it so the side marked "strike face" or "this side toward threat" faces out; on a curved plate, the convex side faces out.
- Check that the plate sits in the pocket without play.
With plates the vest sits differently than empty, so they go in before fitting. In the TactiX plate carrier the plates go into internal pockets front and back. Suitable plate sizes are covered in our article on body armor plates.
Step 2. Put on the vest and close the sides
Loosen the shoulder straps and side bands, then put the vest on over your head or like a jacket, depending on the model. Bring the front and back together at the sides and close them on hook-and-loop without tightening: fitting comes in the next steps.
Fit the vest over the clothes you will actually wear: a winter jacket adds several centimetres to your girth.
Step 3. Set the height with the shoulder straps

Find the notch at the base of your throat above the breastbone. The top edge of the front plate sits just below it: that way the plate covers the heart, lungs and major blood vessels. The back plate sits at the same height, so both cover the same zone.
Tighten the straps in turn and evenly, or the vest will sit crooked. A plate on the stomach leaves the upper chest open, even if the vest feels comfortable.
Step 4. Tighten the cummerbund

The cummerbund holds the vest against the body. Tighten it until a flat hand fits between the band and your ribs: the vest should not shift when you run or bend. If a deep breath is hard, loosen it by a centimetre.
Side panels change the thickness, so the cummerbund is fitted with them inside. On TactiX the volume is also adjusted at the back.
Step 5. Check the fit in motion
| Movement | What should happen |
|---|---|
| Squat and bend | the bottom of the vest does not dig into the thighs |
| Lie prone and raise a hand to the face | the plate does not press into the throat |
| Raise arms overhead | the vest does not ride up to the chin |
| Run a few metres | the plate does not bounce on the chest |
Fitting with gear
Gear pulls the vest down and shifts the plates, so the final fitting is done in full kit.
| Gear | What to check |
|---|---|
| Chest pouches with magazines and first aid kit | plate height: tighten the straps again |
| Backpack | its straps over the vest's shoulder straps do not shift the plate or press on the collarbones |
| Belt or chest rig | the belt does not cover the cummerbund hook-and-loop, so the vest comes off quickly |
| Seat belt in a vehicle | the bottom of the vest does not dig into the thighs, the belt goes over it |
When to check the fit again
| What changed | What to check |
|---|---|
| Clothes under the vest: summer uniform or winter jacket | whether the cummerbund closes |
| Pouches added or moved | plate height |
| Plates replaced, especially with a different thickness | whether the plate sits without play |
| Cover washed and the vest reassembled | plate orientation and hook-and-loop |
| Noticeable weight loss or gain | girth and height |
Common fitting mistakes
| Mistake | Why it is bad | How to fix |
|---|---|---|
| Plate lowered to the stomach | upper chest exposed | raise with the straps to the throat notch |
| Cummerbund too loose | vest shifts, plate slides | tighten until a flat hand fits |
| Cummerbund too tight | hard to breathe, faster fatigue | loosen by a centimetre |
| Fitting without plates | with plates the vest sits lower | fit with plates and gear |
| Plate inserted backwards | protects worse than rated | "strike face" side out |
| Carrier larger than the plate | plate moves in the pocket | size the carrier to the plate |
| Plate only in front | back exposed to rifle bullets | put a second plate in the rear pocket |
| Straps of different length | vest crooked, plate shifted sideways | tighten straps evenly |
| Fitted in summer, worn in winter | cummerbund does not close over a jacket | check the fit over winter clothes |

FAQ
How do you put on a TactiX vest? Insert the plates into the internal pockets, put on the carrier, close the sides on hook-and-loop and set the height with the straps. Volume is adjusted at the back; one size fits Russian sizes 44-56.
At what height should an armor plate sit? The top edge of the front plate just below the throat notch, the back plate at the same height. Do not lower it: the upper chest would be exposed.
Do you wear body armor over a jacket or under it? Tactical and assault vests go over clothing, concealable ones under a shirt or jacket. In winter, check that the cummerbund closes over warm clothes.
How do you put on body armor alone? Adjust the straps in advance, in front of a mirror. Put the vest on, close the cummerbund on one side, then the other, and tighten both evenly.
How can you tell a plate carrier is too big? The plate moves in the pocket, the carrier extends beyond its edges, and the vest sits low even with the straps tightened. DARK ARMOR M-5 and ELITE BLACK come in sizes from 44 to 58; for concealable models see our article on choosing a body armor size.
