Plate Carrier or Body Armor Vest: Differences and How to Choose
· 5 min read · Andrey Sokolov
If the main threat is an assault rifle or a rifle and weight matters, choose a plate carrier with plates. If bullets and fragments can come from any side, you need a body armor vest with plate pockets. It is about 1.5 kg heavier than a carrier, but it protects where there are no plates too.

Plate carrier or body armor vest: a quick choice
| Task | What to choose |
|---|---|
| Main threat is an assault rifle or a rifle, minimum weight needed | plate carrier with plates |
| Fragments and handguns across the whole torso | vest with soft armor all around |
| Both | vest with plate pockets |
| Everyday wear without plates | vest with a Br2 soft panel |
How a plate carrier differs from a body armor vest
A plate carrier is a load-bearing cover for two plates, front and back. The cover itself does not stop bullets: the plates do, and around them is plain fabric. A basic carrier without plates weighs under a kilogram.
A body armor vest covers the whole torso, sides included, with a soft ballistic panel. The panel stops handgun bullets, knives and fragments within its class. Plate pockets are an add-on: the plate goes on top of the panel, and in its area protection rises to the plate's class.
Our TactiX is a plate carrier with a built-in Br1 panel and UHMWPE side panels. Without plates it protects against Br1 handgun bullets, with plates up to Br5 in the plate area.
Coverage and weight
| Model | Soft panel | Weight without plates | With two Br5 plates | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TactiX | Br1, with built-in side panels | 1.5 kg | about 7 kg | $478 |
| ELITE BLACK | Br2 all around | 3 kg | about 8.5 kg | $456 |
| DARK ARMOR M-5 | Br2 all around | 3.1 kg | about 8.6 kg | $478 |
Weight with plates is calculated for our certified Br5 plates, 2.75 kg each. Without plates, the difference between the carrier and the vest is 1.5 kg. For that, the vest gives a Br2 panel over the whole torso, and the carrier gives lower weight, free shoulders and better ventilation.
The plates cover the same area in both cases: two 25×29.5 cm plates make about 15 dm². Outside the plates the soft panel protects, and where there is no panel, there is no protection.
Weak points of a plate carrier and a vest
A plate carrier:
- gives no protection without plates unless a soft panel is built in;
- leaves the sides between plates, shoulders and lower abdomen open;
- two Br5 plates add 5.5 kg on your shoulders.
A body armor vest:
- is heavier and warmer: the panel covers the whole torso;
- this is more noticeable in heat and on a long march than in a vehicle or at a post.
How to size a plate carrier
A plate carrier is sized to the plate, not to your clothing size.
- Choose the plate by chest width: it covers the heart and lungs, with the top edge at the notch at the base of the throat. Plate sizes in millimetres are in our article on body armor plates.
- Check that the plate fits the pocket in width, height and thickness without play.
- Adjust the shoulder straps to the plate height and the cummerbund to your waist. Fit the carrier with plates inside: an empty cover sits differently. Step by step in our article on how to put on body armor.
TactiX comes in one size for Russian sizes 44-56, with volume adjustment at the back. ELITE BLACK comes in three sizes: 44-48, 50-54 and 56-58. We make any model to measure at no extra cost.
Side protection and the cummerbund

The cummerbund is the side band that holds the vest against the body. It takes soft side panels or side plates. A soft panel covers a larger area and weighs little. A side plate stops a rifle bullet, but it is smaller and heavier.
On TactiX the sides are covered by UHMWPE panels. ELITE BLACK and DARK ARMOR M-5 have flexible hook-and-loop cummerbunds, and the soft panel runs all around, sides included. Fit them with the panels inside.
Which one to choose
- TactiX - when plates and mobility come first: 1.5 kg, MOLLE for pouches, MultiCam.
- ELITE BLACK - a black vest with a Br2 panel all around for services and security, MOLLE on the front.
- DARK ARMOR M-5 - a Br2 panel all around, MOLLE and hook-and-loop for a spacer pad (KAP), GREEN MOSS camouflage.
All three models are on the "Tactical and assault" page. Call 8 800 101-76-37 and tell us what you need protection from and how many hours a day you will wear the vest: we will choose the model, size and plates.
FAQ
Does a plate carrier protect without plates? A regular one does not: a fabric cover does not stop bullets. TactiX with its built-in panel protects against Br1 handgun bullets without plates.
What makes a good plate carrier? The plate sits in the pocket without play, stays against the chest when you run and bend, and the cummerbund does not restrict breathing. A built-in soft panel is a plus: protection remains around the plates.
How much does body armor with plates weigh? The vest plus two plates. With our Br5 plates, TactiX weighs about 7 kg and ELITE BLACK about 8.5 kg. The full OBSIDIAN MAX assault kit with plates weighs 15 kg; its contents are covered in our article on assault body armor.
Plate carrier or vest for security work? If there is no rifle threat, a vest with a Br2 panel is the usual choice: it protects the whole torso without plates. What Russian law requires is covered in our article on body armor for security guards.
Do you need a KAP in a plate carrier? A KAP is a spacer pad between the vest and the body: it creates an air gap and spreads the plate's pressure. ELITE BLACK and DARK ARMOR M-5 have hook-and-loop for a KAP on the inside, and OBSIDIAN assault kits include one. More in our article on KAP pads.
