Soft Armor Panel or Hard Plate: What Each One Stops
· updated · 4 min read
A soft panel is enough against handguns, knives and fragments. It will not hold an assault rifle or rifle bullet, and extra layers of fabric will not help: you need a hard plate. In tactical vests the plate goes on top of the panel, and they protect together.

Panel or plate: the quick answer
| Threat | Soft panel | Hard plate |
|---|---|---|
| Knife, bayonet | yes, class S | yes |
| Fragments | yes, class S2 | yes |
| 9×18 handgun (APS, PM) | yes, class Br1 | yes |
| 9×21 handgun (SR-1) | yes, class Br2 | yes |
| AK-74, AKM assault rifle | no | Br4 plate |
| SVD rifle, 7.62×54R armor-piercing bullets | no | Br5 plate |
Can soft armor panels replace a hard plate
No. A soft panel is dozens of layers of strong UHMWPE or aramid fabric. A handgun bullet flattens against the first layers, and the fibres stretch and absorb its energy over a large area.
An assault rifle bullet carries 2.5-5 times more energy than a Br2 bullet. Its core is hardened steel: the bullet does not flatten and pushes the fibres apart. Under GOST, classes Br4 and Br5 come only from a hard plate: extra layers make the vest thicker and heavier but do not reach these classes.
What a Br2 panel stops without a plate
| Class | Handgun and cartridge | Bullet | Velocity | Energy, approx. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Br1 | APS, 9×18 | 5.9 g, steel core | 335±10 m/s | 330 J |
| Br2 | SR-1, 9×21 | 7.93 g, lead core | 390±10 m/s | 600 J |
GOST does not test less-lethal (rubber bullet) guns; Russian law limits their muzzle energy to 91 J. The difference is covered in Br1 or Br2.

On DARK ARMOR M-3 and ELITE BLACK the panel wraps around the torso, sides included. The TactiX plate carrier has a built-in Br1 panel and separate UHMWPE side panels. A plate covers the heart, lungs and major blood vessels, front and back.
What soft armor panels are made of
| Material | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Aramid | soft, stops handgun bullets | heavier, loses some properties when wet, needs a waterproof cover |
| UHMWPE | lighter at the same class, barely absorbs water | handles heat worse |
We make our panels from UHMWPE. The class is set by testing the finished panel, not by the material: the maker chooses the number of layers and how they are stitched, and GOST checks the result by shooting. How aramid and UHMWPE differ in weight, heat and moisture is covered in Aramid or UHMWPE.
Why the plate goes on top of the panel
A bullet breaks the plate's strike face, and fragments of ceramic and core fly out. The fabric behind the plate catches them and takes part of the impact. Around the plate, the same panel covers the sides and edges of the torso.
Many plates are tested together with a soft panel. If the plate's documents say the class is confirmed only with a panel, it is not guaranteed without one. In our models with plate pockets, the plate always sits on top of the panel. Which plate class to choose is covered in our article on body armor plates.
How to care for a soft armor panel
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| Do not wash the panel, wash only the cover | water and detergent can reduce protection |
| Dry in the shade, away from radiators and heaters | heat harms UHMWPE |
| Store flat, without creases or weight on top | creases deform the fabric layers |
| Do not cut or re-sew it | an altered panel loses its class |
| Do not leave it in a closed car in the sun | UHMWPE is sensitive to temperature |
A panel is replaced if it has a cut, a puncture or a bullet mark, even without penetration. Swelling, delamination and a damaged cover that lets water and dirt inside are also reasons to replace it.
GOST requires a panel to keep its class after immersion in water: that is about rain, not a washing machine. Call 8 800 101-76-37 if you are unsure whether a panel needs replacing.
FAQ
What is a ballistic panel in body armor? A soft insert of dozens of layers of aramid or UHMWPE in a sealed cover. It sits inside the vest cover and stops handgun bullets, knives and fragments within its class.
How many layers should a panel have? GOST does not set the number of layers. "30 layers" without a certificate and test report says nothing about protection.
Can ballistic panels be washed? No. Water and heat in a washing machine can reduce protection, so only the cover is washed, without the panels.
Br1 or Br2 plates: which is better? Br1 and Br2 are handgun classes, usually provided by soft panels. A hard plate of these classes is heavier than a panel against a handgun and covers a smaller area.
Does body armor have plate pockets? Yes, our tactical models and OBSIDIAN assault kits do, and the pockets are universal. OBSIDIAN MAX comes with Br5 plates already in the pockets; other models are sold without plates.
Does a Br2 panel stop a TT pistol? The TT pistol in 7.62×25 is not in the current GOST; under the old standard it belonged to the second class. For a specific panel, the answer is in a test report with that weapon.
Does a vest protect the back without a rear plate? Yes, within the panel's class: the back is covered like the chest. The rear plate pocket is there in case of an assault rifle threat from behind.
